70 YEARS OF SLIM BAKER
By: Dorcas Gordon
Above the bustling fair Town of Bristol
A wooded crown sits at a point distal
Home to forest creatures great and small
Including people all seasons through Fall
TTCC, Scouts, Schools, and Fish & Game
All use this resource with ‘Slim’ as its name
Starting as a tribute to a fine man
Everett ‘Slim’ Baker inspired the plan
Conservation Officer loved by all
Age 42 to cancer he did fall
The community rallied to his side
And in 1953 began to stride
To create the Little Round Top preserve
An outdoor area to learn and serve
For seventy years Slim Baker has thrived
Leading all who visit to feel revived
Recent additions include a new trail
Bub Sheffield its namesake, down through the dale
A marked nature path was also installed With signs on which information is scrawled
Certified Tree Farm the area is
Opting for sustainable practices
Throughout the year great events are hosted Luminaries, campfires and s’mores toasted
History preserved at the Sleeper Grave From carriage paths ancient travelers wave
Great people of Newfound we honored then Like Greenan, Hipson, Tapply & Worthen
Their legacies live on at ‘Slim’ today
In nature we reflect and find our way
A treasure we are lucky to cherish
May this place called ‘Slim’ never perish
